This Bold House: A Room By Room Look

When it comes time to update your home, the change you want might be as simple as painting the living room a lighter shade of green or as complex as installing a new kitchen or a two-story addition. But regardless of scope, one thing is certain – every remodeling project should start with a concept.

“Good design is never the result of a series of unrelated decisions. The path to design success is to search out an overriding concept, an idea, a theme that will guide thinking and bring all of the diverse parts of a design into a strong relationship,” says interior designer Amelia Dean, B.S.I.D., owner of Jaro Interiors in Castle Shannon.

What makes a design pleasing is a unified approach to things. Whether the architecture style, the environment in which you live or some other idea, the concept you have in mind should factor into all the decisions you make as you proceed.

For instance, if old-world is your concept, you’ll want to incorporate elements and materials that express old world ideals like permanence, for example, by using natural stones like marble, limestone and granite in the design scheme.

Budget, design and materials must be researched ahead of time. “Ask yourself if it works with the concept, and this will help you make informed decisions,” says Dean.
