Canonsburg’s Future Olympians

On a sunny day in October, Canonsburg Middle School turned out its entire seventh grade, some 350 energetic boys and girls, for a whole day of athletics, fitness, nutrition advice and individual health stat reporting.

“We received a grant of $6160 from Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield to promote lifelong fitness,” remarks Greg Taranto, Principal. And says Susan Vulcano, RN, the school had a good turnout. “We’ve seen quite a few future athletes today,” she noted.

The track events included a mandatory one mile walk or run for all boys and girls. Pilates and other exercises covered the fitness sessions, while in the school library, each child was measured for weight, height, BMI and blood pressure.

All the kids, with sufficient teacher encouragement, completed the day’s activities, including the one-mile marathon. Although no U.S. Olympics Committee scouts were spotted hiding in the bushes, it’s clear they’re taking a serious look at the progress of Canonsburg Middle School’s 7th graders.
